The Claw Grip: Protect Your Fingers Forever
Curl your fingertips inward and let your knuckles guide the blade — the single most important safety technique.

Why the Claw
The claw grip keeps your fingertips tucked behind your knuckles, which act as a guide rail for the side of the blade.
How to Form It
- 1Curl your fingertips inward, resting them on top of the food.
- 2Your knuckles should be the closest part of your hand to the blade.
- 3The flat side of the blade rests against your knuckles.
- 4Move your hand back to set the next slice width.
Practice Drill
- 1Place a cucumber on the board.
- 2Form the claw grip.
- 3Make slow, deliberate cuts.
- 4Gradually increase speed.
- 5After a week of practice, it becomes muscle memory.
